Professional Ear Irrigation Plymouth
Struggling with blocked ears, muffled hearing, or a feeling of fullness that won’t go away? Ear irrigation in Plymouth could be the solution. Also known as ear syringing, this safe and non-invasive procedure uses a gentle flow of water to flush wax from the ear canal. At Precision Health & Training, irrigation ear wax removal is performed by our Nurse Practitioner, Laura Bates, who is qualified, insured, and accredited specifically for this technique.
What Is Ear Irrigation?
Ear irrigation, formerly known as ear syringing, is a safe and effective method for removing excess ear wax (cerumen). It involves using a gentle flow of water to flush out the wax, allowing it to drain naturally and safely. Ear irrigation is especially helpful when ear wax is sticky or too close to the eardrum, where other methods might not work as effectively.
While many places in and around Plymouth offer ear wax removal services, not all have the proper qualifications or insurance to safely perform the irrigation method. Incorrectly performed ear irrigation can lead to serious issues such as ear infections, damage to the ear canal, or eardrum perforation, which is why it is crucial to rely on a professional for this procedure.

When Is Ear Irrigation Treatment Appropriate?
At Precision Health & Training, microsuction is our preferred method for ear wax removal. However, ear irrigation may be the more appropriate choice in some cases.
Irrigation is used when the wax is too sticky or too close to the eardrum, too soft for microsuction to remove cleanly, or hard and needs softening first.
The technique used will depend on your past medical history, the position of the wax in the canal, and its texture. This will be discussed with you at your appointment. Irrigation will only be used when it is safe to do so – Laura will assess your suitability before proceeding.

How Our Plymouth Ear Irrigation Procedure Works
At our Plymouth clinic, we focus on delivering safe and effective ear irrigation. Our skilled Nurse Practitioner carefully assesses each case and uses precise techniques to prevent complications, ensuring you feel comfortable and reassured throughout the entire process. Here is how we carry it out:
- Consultation and assessment – Laura will assess whether irrigation is suitable for you, checking your medical history and the wax’s position in the ear canal.
- Procedure explained – we take the time to explain the ear irrigation process so you know exactly what to expect.
- Gentle cleansing – the outer ear is cleaned using normal saline or an irrigating solution to prepare the ear for the procedure.
- Controlled irrigation – a slow, steady stream of solution is carefully directed against the roof of the ear canal to loosen and remove the ear wax without causing discomfort.
- Post-irrigation care – we document the condition of the eardrum and ear canal after irrigation to detect any potential complications early and ensure the procedure has been completed successfully.
Benefits Of Ear Irrigation Treatment
Unlike over-the-counter ear drops or manual methods like cotton swabs – which can push wax deeper or cause damage, professional ear irrigation at our Plymouth clinic offers:
- Safe and non-invasive – our procedures are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to ensure maximum safety.
- Effective – removes even stubborn or hardened wax that other methods might miss.
- Quick and painless – the procedure typically takes around 15–20 minutes, providing instant relief.
- Qualified and insured – several places in Plymouth offer ear wax removal but not all are qualified or insured to perform irrigation. Laura is qualified, insured and experienced at using both methods on adults and children.
- Safe for children – our insured specialists are trained to safely treat children. A parent must be present during the procedure for anyone under 18.
- CQC regulated – our clinic meets the highest standards in safety, effectiveness, and patient care.
Preparing For Your Ear Irrigation Appointment
To help ensure an effective and comfortable procedure, please follow these steps before your appointment:
- Use Earol spray for five days prior to your appointment. It is easier to use than drops and can be purchased from a pharmacy or online.
- Avoid Otex — it contains peroxide, which can interfere with the procedure and make it less effective.
- If your child is attending, they must be able to follow instructions and remain still. A parent or guardian must accompany anyone under 18.
After Your Ear Irrigation Procedure
Following your ear irrigation procedure, it is recommended that you:
- Keep the ear dry for 5 days after the procedure – use a cotton wool ball in the shower and avoid swimming.
- Do not itch inside the ear.
- Do not fly for 48 hours after the procedure.
Who Is Ear Irrigation Not Suitable For?
Ear irrigation is safe for most patients, but it is not suitable for everyone. There are several exclusions for irrigation. Laura will check that you are suitable before proceeding. Ear irrigation should be avoided if you have a perforated eardrum or a history of perforation within the past 12 months. Irrigation will only be used if it is safe to do so.
What Is The Difference Between Ear Irrigation And Ear Syringing?
Ear irrigation is the modern term for what was previously known as ear syringing. Both involve using water to flush wax from the ear canal, but ear irrigation uses specialist equipment rather than a manual syringe, making it safer and more controlled.
Does Ear Irrigation Hurt?
Ear irrigation may cause slight discomfort but should not be painful. If you experience any pain during the procedure, Laura will stop immediately.
How Long Does Ear Irrigation Take?
The procedure typically takes around 15 – 20 minutes.
Can I Have Ear Irrigation If I Have A Perforated Eardrum?
Ear irrigation should be avoided if you have a perforated eardrum or a history of perforation within the past 12 months. In this case, microsuction is the recommended alternative.
Why Is Professional Ear Irrigation Safer Than DIY Kits?
While there are numerous videos online promoting at-home irrigation using manual syringes or commercially available kits, your ears are delicate. Attempting these methods without proper expertise can result in complications. Incorrectly performed ear irrigation can lead to serious issues such as ear infections, damage to the ear canal, or eardrum perforation. Want to understand the full risks of removing ear wax at home?
